WVU Institute of Technology Vining Library

Gift Policy

Vining Library, WVUIT

As a general rule, gift materials are accepted based on suitability to the academic mission of West Virginia University Institute of Technology. However, some consideration is given to local history and general interest materials. Gifts are gratefully accepted with the understanding that suitable materials will be retained based upon institutional needs.

The following will not be added to our collection.

1. Out-of-date materials with no historical value 2. Textbooks more than 10 years old 3. Duplicates unless in better condition than original copy 4. Materials in poor condition (loose binding, missing or torn pages, water damage, mold, etc.)

Unsuitable items may be given away, offered to other libraries, literacy programs or recycled (at discretion of library director).

Gift plates honoring donor or memorial plates are placed in books upon donor request.

Once the gift item is added to the collection, it is owned by the library and may eventually be a candidate for weeding and discarding.

IRS rules do not allow the recipient of a gift in kind to assign any value. (IRS Publication 561Determining the value of Donated Property, should be consulted.) Any gift with a value of $5,000 or more requires appraisal from a qualified appraiser and filing of IRS Form 8283Noncash Charitable Contributions. An itemized list of titles without monetary value may be requested from the library.
